The Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) was established in 1973 as an educational, training and family planning institution. In 1995 the Association expanded its scope and developed a more holistic approach to Sexual and Reproductive Health.
GRPA is now a leading NGO in the area of holistic sexual and reproductive health and chronic diseases, providing optimum services in a safe and comfortable environment where people are supported to live healthy and productive lives. The main objective of the Association is to develop high quality sustainable services and programs specifically in the area of sexual and reproductive health.
GRPA offers family planning services in Guyana through its Georgetown based Clinic, which is located at 70 Quamina Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, Guyana offers Gynecological Care, Pap Smear tests, Contraceptives, Breast, Pelvic, Prostate and Testicular Examination, Termination of Pregnancy, Infertility Management, Menopausal Syndrome, HIV and STI Testing and Treatment and provides a host of other services. Additionally, the Department offers many services including family, marriage and HIV counseling.
GRPA strives to reach the poor and marginalized sections of the Guyanese population. The Association is involved in Community Outreach, Family Life Education in schools, training of service providers in Sexual and Reproductive Health, including HIV and AIDS, STIs, Family Life Education and related issues. GBV screening is a prerequisite in all interaction with clients while counseling is provided for victims and perpetrators. Community Focus Group discussions on Gender Based Violence are held monthly.
Through its Youth Advocacy Movement (YAM), GRPA runs special youth initiatives, including an Under 20 Club, which provides training and support for out-of-school young people and teenage parents. Public engagement with Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) issues is promoted through lectures, family planning discussions, radio spots, poster displays and the distribution of pamphlets, brochures and manuals.
In 2011, GRPA delivered nearly 174,000 condoms and 56,000 sexual and reproductive health services. It provided an additional 12,000 HIV-related services and 14,000 services were provided to young people below the age of 25 years.
GRPA is a Member Association of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Western Hemispheric Region (WHR). It is also an Associate Member of the Caribbean Family Planning Affiliation Ltd (CFPA). Partners in Guyana include UNFPA, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, National Aids Programme (NAPS), Help & Shelter and Red Thread.
The aims and objectives of the Association are based on the understanding that Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), and access to a broad range of services are fundamental human rights; and that a balance between the population of Guyana and its natural resources and productivity is a necessary condition of human happiness, prosperity and peace. The Association therefore works to promote SRH as a key element to healthy living and lifestyle with the following objectives:
